Frequently Asked Questions

We Specialize In Contract Growers

As a contract grower, your business model has unique challenges: You are tasked by the integrator to supply the facilities and the labor to produce their product. While you do not own the animals within the houses, your income is dependent upon their survival and finished quality. In addition, many variables are outside of your control, such as the cost of propane or power.

Contract growers work hard for every dime they earn – at Johnson Insurance, we want to help you keep more of that money in your pocket, instead of the insurance company’s. We offer highly-discounted products for contract growers. In 90% of cases we see, we are able to reduce a farm operator’s insurance cost AND improve their insurance protection. Contract growers who contact our agency typically end up reducing their current premium 10 – 15%, while improving their ability to recover in the event of a major catastrophe.

Do not pay your next farm insurance bill without contacting our office first!

Hog Houses

Poultry Houses
We offer excellent rates and coverage for all types of poultry houses, including: broiler houses, breeder houses, pullet houses, brooder houses, and grow-out houses. We offer replacement cost coverage on buildings that are less than 20 years old or that have been fully updated.
Litter Sheds
Litter Sheds and composter buildings are items often accidentally left off of policies by our competition. Don't forget to insure your litter shed!
Loss of Farm Income
Most farm insurance policies only protect against the risk of loss to the farm buildings. Imagine a catastrophic scenario: a tornado touches down at your farm and ravages house #1 and # 2. Your insurance will pay to repair the structures, but you still have bills due even when you aren't getting income from the integrator on those houses. Loss of Farm Income coverage helps lessen this potential financial disaster. If a tornado, fire, etc. were to damage your farm property and cause you to lose income, this policy provision will help keep you afloat. Various amounts of coverage are available, depending on the size and type of your operation.
Equipment Breakdown
The Equipment Breakdown endorsement adds coverage to the farm policy for mechanical and electrical breakdown, which are typically not covered. When we tie this coverage into the Loss of Farm Income coverage, the farmer is provided with a powerful method of recovery in the event of an equipment malfunction. For example, if a broiler house fan suffered a mechanical breakdown and the grower lost a house full of birds, the Equipment Breakdown endorsement would respond and cover this loss. Another example would be if the local power went out and the built-in generator suffered a mechanical breakdown and failed to start. In this scenario, multiple houses of animals could suffocate. With the equipment breakdown endorsement, this loss would be covered.
Generators & Transfer Switches
Whether in a standalone building or attached directly to a confinement house, it is imperative to account for the cost of replacing generators and their accompanying transfer switches. Many farms use 100KW+ models, which can cost $30,000+ to replace. We offer replacement cost coverage on generators and switches.
Employer's Liability
Many growers employ full or part-time help for farm labor. Even the smallest operation typically hires an extra pair of hands here and there to clean out houses. Many growers do not know that they could be held responsible for an employee's injuries, even if it is just a part-time employee on a small job. If you use hired help in any capacity at any time, you have an exposure to an employee-injury-lawsuit. We offer an Employer's Liability endorsement, for an extremely low cost, that protects the grower against liability from employee injuries.
Farm Dwellings
We can cover your dwelling on the same policy as the rest of your farm insurance items. Combining coverage makes things cheaper! Dwelling coverage features flexible coverage forms, the option of replacement cost, and discounted rates.
Well Pumps
Well pumps are another item that can accidentally be forgotten on the farm policy. Johnson Insurance always recommends covering well pumps, as they are vital to your farm's operation. We offer an endorsement that covers all of your well pumps at their replacement cost.
Barns
In addition to confinement houses and litter sheds, your operation may have additional barns and buildings. We can cover all types of barns, including those used for the storage of hay. We offer low rates and can offer replacement cost coverage on buildings that are less than 20 years old or those that have been fully updated.
Equipment Sheds
Many operations have one or more equipment sheds, used to store tractors, combines, housekeepers, and other mobile farm machinery. These sheds are normally open, with wood frames and metal roofs. We can cover all types of equipment sheds and can offer replacement cost coverage on buildings that are less than 20 years old or those that have a new roof.
Tractors and Farm Equipment
Almost every farm operation has mobile farm machinery. We offer excellent coverage and low rates on tractors and other farm equipment. From small operations with one small tractor to service the premises, to larger farms with hundreds of thousands of dollars of equipment, you could be saving money insuring your machinery with Johnson Insurance.
Farm Premises Liability
Farm Liability should be a part of every grower's insurance program. Often $1,000,000 of liability insurance can be obtained for $100 - $200 per year. Farm Premises Liability insurance protects the grower from claims of property damage and bodily injury due to accidents on the farm. It only takes one incident, one time, to create a situation that could create a long and costly lawsuit. Protect yourself and your family by making sure you have enough farm liability insurance.
Pollution Liability
Every farm has an exposure to pollution liability. Whether run off from a litter shed, overflow from a hog lagoon, or simply overspray from farm chemicals, contract growers have a large exposure for a pollution liability loss. Pollution liability should be a part of every grower's risk management check list. Do you have a pollution liability exposure? Does your current policy provide pollution liability?
Tenant Dwellings
Many operations have mobile homes or stick-built homes on the property, occupied by family, employees, or other tenants. We can cover these dwellings on the same farm policy as all of the above items, for rates generally lower than our competition.
Workers Compensation
Operations of all sizes have the potential to have an employee injured on the job.  Workers compensation insurance protects the farm operator from paying for these injuries out of pocket.  The insurance coverage provides farm employees payment of medical bills and lost wages should they be injured or become ill in the course of their employment.  Any farming operation with full-time employees should consider Workers Compensation an integral part of their insurance and risk management program.  In some cases, the insurance may even be required by the State.  Johnson Insurance can provide Workers Compensation insurance for your operation – we are typically able to get rates about 15% lower than our biggest competitors.Call today for more information.
